Sir Ellis has always been kind and gracious and in the words of Chanka Seeterram, Chairman of the National Board “He was a true servant of the people. He endorsed and promoted Habitat as he saw housing the poor as one of the best means to give back to humanity. He has truly served Habitat with distinction. His contributions will continue to impact future generations.”

We will all miss Sir Ellis as he was always only a phone call away, ready and eager to advise or assist in any way possible. Sir Ellis led by example and he did not ask of anyone that which he was not willing to do himself. It is this sense of duty and service to humanity which truly expressed his work, he answered the call to service and he served with distinction. Although he will be greatly missed, his legacy will continue and as we reflect on his life and work, his greatness will be remembered and his shining example will be emulated.

At Habitat for Humanity^® Trinidad and Tobago, we are commemorating thirty-four years of global service to mankind on the UN celebrated “World Habitat Day” — Monday 4th October, 2010 — and as such, we seek to observe with a Hunger Banquet to heighten awareness of ongoing activities to alleviate poverty housing and homelessness. It will be held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad at 7:00 pm. This is in keeping with Habitat’s theme for the day which is “health and housing and neighborhood revitalization”.

Corporate T&T continues to respond to the cry for help — help that is still needed to help rebuild Haiti. Tribe Carnival handed over a cheque for $25,000 towards Habitat’s commitment of building 50,000 houses over the next five years in Haiti.

Habitat has been in Haiti for 26 years and has a long term commitment to continue serving the people of Haiti.

The handing over ceremony took place at Tribe headquarters in Wookbrook on Friday 23 April, 2010.

Habitat for Humanity® Trinidad and Tobago (HFHTT) is pleased to partner with Tribe Carnival Band on this project. HFHTT is very proud of this relationship and is committed to enhancing this relationship as we unite in this common mission of serving humanity through the elimination of poverty housing and homelessness and the provision of other housing solutions for especially the vulnerable children and physically/mentally challenged in our society.

The Henrys are the proud parents of two young beautiful children under the age of six (6) years old. Mrs. Henry is a very vocal advocate for the National HIV/AIDS coalition as she is HIV positive. She is quite aware of the ways in which the disease can disrupt one’s daily life and will do all within her power to help others avoid contracting the virus. Unfortunately, her beloved husband damaged his spinal cord and is unable to work a regular job. Consequently, they have been walking on a very, very tight financial rope within recent years.

The family’s home is made up of termite eaten rotting boards and a rusting galvanize roof which is on the verge of collapse. Part of the outer wall at the front of the house which was made of ply board has since collapsed and is replaced by fabric. The bathroom/toilet facility is outdoors which further makes it an unsafe dwelling for the children in particular. The house is unlivable and at present they have been sharing a room in Mrs. Henry’s mother’s house.

We can do so much to bring some safety and security to this most deserving family. This project has been named “The Promise Home” as it will symbolize the promise Mrs. Hamilton-Henry has not only for her children but significantly the promise she has made to herself. This legacy that she wants to leave for her children is one of strength, determination and hope. She is afflicted with this disease but that does not mean her life and dreams are over, it has not destroyed the best in her.

Women can build and by joining forces and working together side by side we can help this family build “The Promise Home”.
